Remarkable resumes which get you noticed.
As things are starting to pick up many job seekers have asked me about resumes and how long they should be. I totally understand people don’t want to leave anything out especially when they are applying for a job. But the reality is that the hiring manager or the HR Manager may not even get a chance to read your entire resume. So how do we keep them engaged and how do we get them to schedule the interview.? How do we get them to read between the lines and request to see or speak to the owner of the resume?
Here are some tips to keep in mind:
If you are a college student or recent graduate keep your resume to one page. Ideal resumes for professionals should be 2 pages and that is enough to show your achievements and experience. Many people ask me if 3 pages is ok, it is a bit long but it is definitely the cut-off, you don’t want a manager to think it’s too long and not read it at all.
So how do you keep your resume to 1-2 pages when you have years of experience?
- Make sure you use a modern font and use the right spacing so you can fit a lot on the page size (10-12)
- Make your most proud moments very visible on the first page to keep them interested and keep reading
- Make sure the resume fits the job description
- Keep the margins professional and get more space on the page
- Do not use fancy formatting and images
- Most of all make sure its ATS friendly so that you can submit your resume through any job portal or website
