The good news is that you can apply for some amazing opportunities from the safety and comfort of your home. You need a computer, internet access, email, resume, and cover letter, and you are good to go!
Follow these steps to apply online:
- Update your resume.
- Update your profile on professional networking platforms.
- Use job search engines and company websites to learn more about the company you are applying to.
- Draft a separate cover letter for each application.
- Complete the online job application.
- Make sure your responses are error-free, accurate, and fully completed.
- Track and follow up on your job applications.
- Keep applying.
How to Stand Out
It’s easy for your resume to get buried in the endless stream of online applicants. Here are some tips that will help you stand out:
Do your research.
Learn everything you can about the company. Tailor your resume to show what you know about them and the industry. Incorporate keywords that will catch the attention of hiring managers.
Create an online presence.
Create a simple about.me online profile and link to your social media accounts. If you have a professional portfolio, include that on your page as well.
Trick the ATS.
Your resume will get tossed by the ATS (application tracking software) if you don’t read job descriptions and include keywords in your resume.
Another recommendation that I have is to avoid using fancy graphics and formatting for your resume. ATS will not accept resumes it cannot read. If you’d like to illustrate your creativity through graphics and formatting I recommend that you send it by mail.
