MTV Coaching Empowers Client to Successfully Transition to New Position
Overview
An experienced sales professional was beginning a new job and was anxious about getting established with a new company and wanted to avoid some pitfalls they experienced in previous roles. After working with MTV Coaching, they had the confidence they needed to feel comfortable in their new position, felt prepared to navigate potential challenges, and excelled in the new position, resulting in two promotions.
Challenge
Our client was excited to take on the new responsibilities that came along with their new job but was nervous about starting over at a new company with new colleagues, a different culture, and distinctive interpersonal relationships. Pressuring themselves to learn everything as quickly as possible, and eager to make connections with their new coworkers, they were feeling stressed and struggling to find confidence. Keen to foster those new associations, they found themselves facing challenges disconnecting from work in their personal life, afraid they would miss something important. They also worried some of the new colleagues they were getting to know were becoming difficult to work with, creating a tense work culture.
Solution
In need of support to thrive in their new job, our client partnered with MTV Coaching to build a foundation of skills and solutions that would help them through a myriad of workplace challenges.
To help them feel more comfortable in those early weeks, one of the approaches we advocate for is to “embrace the stress” – allowing oneself to accept they will make mistakes and move forward from them. We encouraged them to focus on observing the new environment before worrying too much about where they fit in. To help manage the relationship with a difficult colleague, we developed a strategy to first endeavor to understand their team member and their behavior, then look for opportunities to compromise or ask advice of the difficult coworker. Emphasizing the critical role work/personal life balance plays in our overall mental and emotional health, as well as their work performance, we established an approach where our client discussed with their team leader the best way to communicate with the team so they could prioritize work during work hours and have the freedom to stop comparing themselves to their coworkers and focus on their personal life when outside of the office.
To help with overall work stress, we guided our client to begin a practice of meditation and gratitude as well as set aside time to rest, to help reduce stress, be present in the moment, and sharpen their concentration on the task at hand.
Results
Our client was able to strategically set themselves up for success in their new position. They entered the new environment with a sense of self-assuredness, easing the transition. Their relationship with their challenging coworker improved significantly. They enjoy their new job and are making connections with their new team members, while avoiding overworking and eventual burnout. They now have a job where they feel comfortable, confident, and valued. Since working with MTV Coaching, they have received two promotions and increased their sales performance from 60% to 102%.
