Golden Rules to Follow!

Many job seekers get discouraged that they message recruiters and hiring managers and then don’t hear anything back. Don’t add meaning to radio silence….just accept that you did not get a response and move on. The reason could be anything and don’t think its about you. They could have a family emergency or just a big project to complete at work. If you stay optimistic you might get a response and be surprised.

So here is the Golden Rule: Message people and don’t expect anything in return. Then you might be pleasantly surprised.

One of my clients just got their dream job this way. He messaged a hiring manager and never heard anything back. But then a few months later got a message that his resume was shared with them and he got an interview that led to the job offer.

When you message people make it crystal clear and short, no one has the time to read long messages. Always have a system to follow up and I suggest you do that. The reason is that many people never follow up so if you are the one that does, they might respond. Stay consistent and make this system part of your goal.

Reach out to your entire network and ask if they can help. You never know who people may know and who they would introduce you to. SO, if someone tells you to go through their contact list on LinkedIn and ask for introductions. Take the time and so that because an introduction can lead to something a lot bigger.

Most of all when you are messaging people get into the habit of offering your expertise as well, whatever it may be. If you are in a different industry offer to share your knowledge or offer to exchange best practices if they are in the same business.

Another Golden Rule I practice is giving information away and sharing. If you do that then people will be more likely to do the same and help you.

I have seen job seekers request information from their contacts and hiring managers about a certain job they saw posted. Their messaging clearly states that they need and want help because they are unemployed. Well, the reality is that that is only their problem and people will not be quick to help if they feel it’s only a one-way street. Develop a relationship first and then start asking for favors!
